Clothes Spin: Tribute to the Doctor [Flashback Friday]

TGIF! It's Flashback Friday. This is a different kind of fashion post for a change, because it's a geeky one as well. It's a little obvious if you've been reading this blog for a while, but in case you haven't noticed, I'm a Whovian - a Doctor Who fan. Ten is my doctor, and I own a sonic screwdriver.

I've been organizing my files and I found this pic of my Eleventh Doctor outfit. It's such a fun one and brought a smile to my lips when I saw it this morning.

It's definitely a girly ensemble, but with a geeky twist. I already posted about the shirt before, but that time I paired it with jeans and wedge sneakers, and it was a lot more rugged than this. This shirt is one of my favorite shirts of all time. The design, with white words forming the shape of the Tardis (the Doctor's spaceship of sorts) against the exact shade of Tardis blue, is just too clever. 

I also have another Doctor Who shirt that I wore on the Day of the Doctor. One can never have too many Whovian shirts!

Gizmo Fixation: iPhone 5s Unboxing and Casual Review

When Apple came out with the iPhone 5s in October, guess who was up for a phone recontract? Me. This is my geek-out post over this thing of beauty, so if you have one, or you're curious about the phone, or you're just into gadgets overall, read on.

I knew it was going to be my next phone because of the lucky timing, of course, and also because it is a far cry from its previous versions. It has an A7 chip with 64-bit architecture -- a first for the iPhone. That means it's pretty fast, and has terrific graphics. It also has an M7 coprocessor to assist the A7, which makes it faster, and LTE connectivity means it's capable of fast Internet as well. Plus, the new iOS7 was made for it too, so it's just hardware and software beauty in one neat package.

Another first is the awesome fingerprint sensor built into the home button, which unlocks the phone for you and let's you authorize app store purchases in a flash. Then of course there's the camera, with a larger sensor, larger aperture, and more light sensitivity. It has true flash now, which makes those awful pictures taken in dim lighting so much more bearable. And it all boils down to how gorgeous this phone is. At this point in time, I like my phones sleek and slim. I don't really like the large phones because they're not handy for me. The iPhone 5s is thin and light, and that's that.

The phone arrived in Philippine shores last November, but I was too lazy to call my service provider and set things up. I had to acquire it through my provider's rewards program, that's why, because I've been a postpaid subscriber for so many years now and the phone was a lot cheaper because of it. I ended up getting the phone in December and I've been using it for about a month now.
I did take unboxing pictures though, because I love unboxings. (I even unboxed our Keurig!) The phone was actually unboxed at the store because they needed to put the sim card in and have me inspect it to make sure it had nothing wrong with it. I also went straight to another store shortly after to have a screen protector and bumper case put on it because I'm obsessive-compulsive like that. However, I still unboxed it at home. Toy Nerdiness: Lego Lord of the Rings - Gandalf Arrives

I collect toys, but I don't collect Lego. The sets are way too expensive and I have way too many other obsessions. Once in a while though, something comes along that's too good to resist and that's when I give in. One of those sets is Gandalf Arrives from the Lego Lord of the Rings series.

I love the books and the movies, and I have the Lego LOTR DS game too, so this set was a definite must-have for me. The hubby and I picked it up last year as soon as the LOTR sets were released.  It shows Frodo meeting Gandalf at the Shire, during the beginning of The Fellowship of the Ring. It contains two mini-figs - Frodo and Gandalf, plus the book Frodo was reading, and a horse with a cart filled with fireworks and veggies. Here go the pics!

Toy Nerdiness: BMO from Adventure Time Fig

I love toys. I collect movie/book/cartoon/TV show tie-ins, as well as designer toys and vinyl figures. Toys are my vice.

My last toy acquisition besides the ones I got at the most recent Toy Con, was Adventure Time's BMO. I think this cartoon rocks, especially all the geeky references it makes, and my favorite character is BMO, who looks like an old skool Gameboy. I found the toy in Greenhills, along with Finn and Jake figs. 

It's absolutely mathematical! 

  

Toy Nerdiness: My Weapons Arsenal

Hello! It's a stormy typhoon Monday here and I just crawled out from the rock I've been living in for the past week. Sorry about the lack of posts -- life happened, as usual. Anyway, I spent a couple of days the past week fixing up the apartment, and it reminded me of this special corner in our place.

Toy Nerdiness: Toy Con 2013

June 14 and 15 was all about toys! I went on the first day with my friend Jaja and her friend KC (Aleq told me to go and find my sonic screwdriver before it was gone), and then I went on the second day with hubby Aleq so he could experience it too. It was a blast! Here go the pics.

Game On: Lego Lord of the Rings for the DS Lite

Finished Lego Lord of the Rings yesterday! Got it last weekend at DataBlitz Paseo Sta. Rosa. I saw a lot of reviews online that rated it low but I also saw a lot of forums where players discussed how they disagreed with the reviews. 

I loved it. Of course I love anything Lord of the Rings and I even have the Gandalf Arrives Lego Set, so I must admit that I'm severely biased about this. It is simply such a fun game to play! It's fairly easy, though I did have to look up a couple of hints online for some areas where I couldn't figure out what to do. When it gets hard it can get quite annoying, but I've tried games where I could barely finish the game due to the level of difficulty and I hate those. This game only took me three days to finish, and I didn't even go on addict mode and lost sleep and time over it. I like that it wasn't that kind of game.

In story mode, you get to play as everyone in the Fellowship of the Ring. Each character has a specific skill set that you need to utilize to get through certain areas. The character switching can be pretty irritating at times especially on boss levels (watch out for the one of Legolas and Aragorn vs. the Watcher in the Water at the Mines of Moria) but I got the hang of it eventually. Disclaimer: I'm not the best gamer ever so I do think someone with better skills can have an easier time of it. Of course there was Lego-building action throughout the game, which added a totally different dimension to it so it isn't just straightforward RPG.

I also really enjoyed the humor! Lord of the Rings has a real serious story, but the game creators inserted some fun snippets in the cut-scenes in between all the serious stuff from the movie. [Spoiler alert!] The opening scene alone where Galadriel was talking about the nine rings of power was funny - one of the kings dropped the ring and tried to get it back with his foot! The characters also show off their newly leveled-up skills with a bit of comedy -- Aragorn got nicked by his sword Anduril, Gandalf couldn't get his staff out of the ground, etc. 

I do wish the game was a little bit longer, and that there was more stuff to do to get through levels. I've seen the YouTube walkthroughs for the PC/Playstation/Xbox versions and they look a lot more awesome. But hey, this is a DS game, and it did manage to entertain me from start to finish.
