Fashion Fun: The Vogue September Issue 2013

Vogue September 2013

Warning: This is a browser-crasher.

The September Issue is the most important one of the year for Vogue magazine. It's always the thickest issue packed with fun fashion features, and more than half of it is made up of fashion ads, which are just as fun to look at. It ushers in a new year for fashion, giving readers a comprehensive report on what's to come for the next seasons.

My Voguestagram

It has even reached a sort of iconic status because of the movie, The September Issue, which chronicled how much work actually goes into the issue every year. When it came out, I just had to see it. Coming from a magazine background, I could relate to the behind-the-scenes look at magazine production. Every time I think of The September Issue I find myself really missing working in print.

I've gone off-tangent though. Yesterday, I posted about the Vogue September Issues from last year and the year before. This year's edition is actually thinner than last year's, which is a bit of a surprise. Somehow I always expect each September issue to be thicker than the last.

Kate Moss, Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lawrence

Every year though, the magazine outdoes itself, and this year was no exception. September 2013 is truly directional, with some utterly dreamy editorials, and incredibly vibrant features. Here's a rundown.

Trends

As Vogue Contributing Editor Candy Pratts Price says in the movie, "September is the January in fashion." The magazine tells you what's next. On top of the features, the numerous ads in it tell you exactly what to look out for. In Vogue, you don't ignore the ads -- you look at them.

According to 2013's September Issue, this is the bag silhouette to go for this season.

Freja Beha Erichsen  for Prada. Check out that gray ostrich bag.

My goodness, Michelle Williams looks positively exquisite in the Louis Vuitton ads. I actually like that tan tote.

Michael Kors did a black and white quilted number that looks Chanel-inspired.

The tan bag. So fab. Need, want, etc.

Celine. Ugh Phoebe Philo always comes up with something covetable. This bag is perfection.

Hugo Boss came up with an office-ready version.

Chloe's take on the bag is unique, as always. Coveting so hard!

Mulberry went with a classic design.

Brahmin did an inverted silhouette kind of thing.

Escada went with casual luxury.

Nine West's polished utilitarian piece.

Tod's pretty blue version.

Vera Wang went with blue as well.

Kate Spade's adorable take on the trend. Love the subtle bow. Want want want.

One of the articles featured another Celine piece. So. Cool.

Even the NFL ad showed a sporty version.

Dark and androgynous seems to be in as well, which is something I'm all for.

Ultra modern Miu Miu

J Brand - impeccable styling

Effortlessly cool Topshop

Amanda Seyfried and Dalianah Arekion for Givenchy

In love with this Paige ad

Freja Beha Erichsen is the epitome of dark and androgynous (Zadig & Voltaire).

Ads

Speaking of ads, there were some really great ones in this issue. I chose a few that really stood out to me.

I don't know what's going on here but I love it!

Really appreciating the diversity in these ads.

Good job Diesel!

I adore the Phillip Lim for Target ads.

So chic!

Emma Stone always looks gorgeous in the Revlon ads. I need to find the Nearly Naked line here.

Features

Vogue always spotlights strong women, but this issue featured some very cool guys too.

Jelena Ristic is so cute!

She's tennis star's Novak Djokovic's girlfriend.

Great article on Amanda Lindhout, a journalist who was kidnapped in Somalia.

Michelle Phan! I love her. Can't wait for her Em cosmetics line to reach our shores.

Vogue Fashion Director Tonne Goodman did an amazing job styling cover girl Jennifer Lawrence.

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer -- successful women in tech should always be profiled.

Hello, Benedict Cumberbatch!

A badass Orlando Bloom? Yes!

Other features that piqued my interest:

Food pics for charity is a great idea.

Acne Studios co-founder Jonny Johansson's house is gorgeous.

They also did a story on stylist/socialite/Chanel ambassador Caroline Sieber's wedding, which is reminiscent of their story on Kate Moss' wedding two September issues ago. Who doesn't love weddings, particularly utterly beautiful ones like this?

Lovely bride's dress by Chanel, flower girl and paige boy outfits by Chloe

My girl crush Lauren Santo Domingo and her husband were there, along with Emma Watson.

A Midsummer Night's Dream indeed.

Editorials

Last but not the least, the September Issue wouldn't be complete without spectacular editorials from Vogue Creative Director Grace Coddington. As Creative Digital Director Sally Singer put it in the movie, "Grace is without question, the greatest living stylist. There's no one better than Grace. There's no one who can make any photographer take more beautiful, more interesting, more romantic, more just stunningly realized pictures than Grace. There's no one better, period. She comes from the idea that fashion is this world of play and make believe. It's as if someone's gone to the dressing up box and found the most wonderful, personal things, and put them together. But it's beautiful."

Supermodel Daria Werbowy is looking good. She did this shoot without makeup too. Also, Anne Leibovitz photography + Grace Coddington styling: spot on.

Edie Campbell in Saint Laurent by Hedi Slimane, styled by Grace Coddington, photographed by David Sims

Grace Coddington + David Sims + Couture = Breathtaking.

That's it for this year's issue. Until next year, Vogue!

    1. Hi! Thanks for dropping by! The September Issue was such a good documentary, and the September issues really are fabulous. I'm just sad that I never found the 2007 issue. I wasn't collecting Vogue then.
