After Eleanor & Park and Attachments, I went straight to Fangirl. It's Rainbow Rowell's most recent book, and it proved to be a quick read. Like her first two books, I couldn't put this one down. I just felt like I wanted to know what happens next and I didn't have the willpower to wait.
Fangirl is a YA (young adult) book about Cath, a girl who is obsessed about a fictional book and movie character called Simon Snow and the make-believe world that surrounds him. She writes fan fiction, and often retreats into it, especially when real life is too much to handle. In the midst of all the fangirling, she has to deal with her twin sister Wren, troubled dad, estranged mom, roommate Reagan, and a boy named Levi. All of that of course, goes on top of everything else that college brings.
Two stories unravel in the book -- the Simon Snow story that's like a cross between Harry Potter and Twilight, and Cath's own story. Fangirl is a love letter to writing, as well as an actual love story.
It's a captivating read, since it has a ton of plot twists and turns and you never quite know what will happen next. It was great to revisit the world of college, and I caught myself reminiscing about that time quite a bit. The only thing is, I couldn't relate to it much, even though I could relate to the writing part a bit (I am a writer by profession, but I've never tried fiction). I don't know why, but it didn't quite resonate with me as much as the other books did.
Still, I had an enjoyable time reading this book. It's realistic and adorable and I lost sleep just trying to get to the last page. It's fun.
